Welcome to my class webpage. I am looking forward to working with all of you this year.

This is my 5th year at Vidalia High School, after a short hiatus last year, and my 11th year teaching. I have worked in two other parishes in Louisiana (Tangipahoa and Ascension), in Alabama, at an online educational company, and worked as a consultant with the state of Louisiana Department of Education.  Outside of school, I am a wife (married to my husband of 21 years, Tim Smith who teaches and coaches at VJH) and a mom to 4 wonderful children (my daughter Katie, a VHS Alumni c/o 2016, and 3 sons, Patrick, Philip, and Timothy who all attend VHS).

This year I am teaching English II and Fine Arts Survey.On each class page you will find class notes, handouts, and plans for each week, as well as due dates and test information. For information on your class, click on the appropriate link. Notes and other information will be uploaded regularly.

Midterms Approaching

We have made it to the final countdown to Christmas break and the end of the first semester. There is always a lot going on. This month has been rough and I have missed several days fighting an illness that does not seem to want to leave. Students are finishing up interim testing, which will count as their midterm grades, and we have just finished the novel for the second none weeks, Things Fall Apart. Students have a timed writing essay the day of the scheduled midterm on this essay. We will be doing these on the laptops and submitting them to Google Classroom. Students also need to complete the last vocabulary quiz and chapter quizzes on Google Classroom this week as well. To help students improve their overall grades, I also have a bonus opportunity for them to complete an African mask similar to the ones we discussed in the book. The complete assignment can be found on the website along with a PowerPoint they can reference for tips and information about the meaning of the masks. This project is due by Tuesday, December 19th. No late projects will be accepted.  I hope all of you have a wonderful and peaceful holiday and enjoy your break! We have a lot coming up in the second semester as we begin counting down to summer!

2nd Nine Weeks

I hope everyone is enjoying the lovely fall weather and the Friday night excitement that our Vidalia Vikings are bringing to town! Today, students were given their books for this unit, Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe. We will be reading this book and working on assignments based on themes and concepts covered in the book.  If your child is struggling with reading or needs additional help, links can be found within the daily powerpoints that will direct you to the video of the story being read aloud. We will be working on this together as a class but everyone needs to be working and applying themselves. Students need to have their books with them daily and will need post-it notes for annotations. If students need additional help remember I am available for tutoring after school Tuesday (3:30-4pm) and Wednesday (3-4pm). If parents/guardians would like to set up a conference, please call the office to schedule or send me an email. My planning period is from 9:40-10:34 during regularly scheduled days or by appointment.

Unit 2 and First Essay

We have had a busy couple of weeks working on rough drafts and our final essay. Due to some issues with the internet connections I have extended the deadline for the Persuasive Essay to Monday, October 23rd. All submissions are done digitally. We have been using Google Drive and students today should have received an email inviting them to join my Google Classroom where we will be able to take quizzes, have discussions about the novels we read, and send their assignments to be graded. Report cards will be issued tomorrow and I would love to meet with as many parents and guardians as possible. Please plan to stop by my room and see me. Students will get points if they have someone stop in and talk to me about what is coming up this 9 weeks! Happy Balloon Race Weekend. It is a great time to be a Viking :)

English 2 Unit 1 Test and Essay Updates

Today, 9/28 we started the Unit 2 test, students will finish this tomorrow, Friday, 9/29. Unit tests are formatted to mimic what they will see on the EOC/LEAP 2025 test this year, so they are very in-depth. Because of this, students are given additional time as well as a day of review before the test.

Next week, 10/2 we will start our Rhetorical Essay. A rubric for this will be posted Monday afternoon following our class discussions. Any student needing additional help are encouraged to come after school for assistance. I am here Tuesday 3:30-4 pm and Wednesday 3-4 pm for tutoring. I do request students sign up if they plan on staying so I can plan accordingly.

~~~~~Anyone who missed the test in class needs to schedule their make-up exam. This can be scheduled for the Wednesday after school. After 1 week, tests become essay exams so that we can go over the test as a class. Parents and Students are responsible for having transportation arranged on make-up and tutoring days.
